This time, we will answer these questions.

Facilities Planning in 3 Minutes provides a simple explanation of building facilities planning that can be understood in 3 minutes.

This article explains how to plan the outlet space of a water supply system.

What is the outlet space?

Outlet space means the vertical distance between the outlet end of a water faucet or water supply pipe and the overflow edge.

In the case of a water tank, it refers to the vertical distance between the inlet end and the bottom end of the overflow pipe.

If the outlet space is not secured, the clean water in the water supply pipe may become contaminated.

This is because when negative pressure occurs inside the water supply pipe, the water that was once discharged may be sucked in.

This phenomenon is called back siphonage.

Outlet space is necessary to prevent back siphonage.

Outlet clearance

The outlet space distance is determined by the size of the nominal diameter to be connected.

Please also take the following points into consideration when making your plans.

  • Leave a distance of at least 2D between the adjacent wall and the center of the spout
  • If the end face of the spout is not parallel to the overflow surface, the space between the center of the end of the spout and the overflow edge of the sanitary fixture or water receiving container shall be the spout space.
  • The overflow edge shall be the lower end in the case of a horizontally-discharged overflow pipe, and the upper end in the case of a vertically-discharged overflow pipe.
  • For nominal sizes not listed in the table, interpolate to find the outlet space.
  • However, in the case of ball taps, bathtubs, pools, etc., the following applies:
    • 1) For pole taps over 25mm, if the nominal diameter and the effective opening are significantly different, the outlet space and the distance from the neighboring walls can be calculated based on the inside diameter of the effective opening (minimum opening).
However, the outlet space must be 50mm or more.
    • 2) When supplying water to a bathtub, the vertical distance from the overflow edge to the center of the spout must be at least 50 mm.
    • 3) When supplying water to aquariums such as swimming pools where the water surface is prone to foaming, and to aquariums and containers that are cleaned or chemically used in business activities, the vertical distance from the overflow edge to the center of the outlet must not be less than 200 mm.

Example Plan

Let’s say the water supply pipe has a diameter of 25A.

In this case, the installation plan for the water tap would be as shown in the figure.

When the outlet space cannot be secured

If there is not enough space for the outlet, you can install a vacuum breaker to prevent backflow .

A vacuum breaker is a device that automatically sucks in air to prevent backflow when negative pressure occurs inside a water supply pipe.

My Experience

If you use a direct water supply connection method, you must take care when installing the vacuum breaker .

This is a story about when I designed a commercial facility in a certain designated city.

Initially, the client’s design request was for an underground sprinkler valve with a vacuum breaker.

However, when the waterworks department inspected the house, they instructed us to ensure there was enough space at the outlet.

This is because it is a direct water connection system, meaning that the piping inside the building is directly connected to the water main.

The water department didn’t like that.

So we changed it to a faucet column, but in order to make it less noticeable, the design costs increased.

This is definitely an issue that will get the construction department in a bad mood.

A vacuum breaker is merely an alternative solution for the outlet space.

Therefore, if they were going to hire him, they should have done administrative checks beforehand.

Everyone please be very careful!
